Checklist Compliance with the law on persons with disabilities: digitisation as a basis for developing other topic areas

Type of project: Prototype

Disabilities concerned: Mental disability, Polydisability

Topics: Autonomy, Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Health, Sexuality

Statut : In progress

The prototype to be developed is the digitisation of a checklist available on paper. This will be used to self-check compliance with the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) by institutions for persons with cognitive disabilities.

The prototype to be developed is the digitisation of a checklist available on paper. This will be used to self-check the compliance of institutions for persons with cognitive disabilities with the CRPD. The checklist was developed in paper form by HSLU in cooperation with OST as part of a participatory team involving people with cognitive disabilities, and has been successfully tested in several institutions. This checklist focuses on sexuality, contraception and the desire to have children. Digitisation makes it possible to self-check compliance with the CRPD as follows:

1) Respondents (persons with disabilities, family members, professionals) can enter their answers directly online on a device (tablet, laptop or other).

2) Based on the responses from the various target groups, an overall assessment of the institution’s state of compliance with the CRPD is presented (also in visual form).

3) Specific recommendations are formulated for the different topic areas in order to continue developing towards compliance with the CRPD.

One of the challenges of digitising the checklist is to develop a user-oriented format,

i.e. a digitised form of the checklist in which user guidance, language and the structure of commands are as simple as possible, so that people with cognitive impairments can complete it independently and if possible without outside help. The presentation of results should also be easy to understand (e.g. with visualisations in the form of a thermometer).

The creation of a digital prototype of the CRPD compliance checklist will enable this self-monitoring tool to be used widely in the future and will serve as a basis for the development of other checklists for monitoring the rights of persons with disabilities in other areas of life.

Screenshot of the health and care checklist. It asks respondents to rate several items as yes, sometimes or in part, no, or I can't answer.
