This is done by integrating an existing captioning plug-in into a web browser and performing various usability tests with hearing impaired users on web pages containing videos. The software prototype provides a video player that plays videos on web pages and provides captioning and transcription functionality. When the user selects this feature, the video player reads the previously generated VTT (Video Text Tracks) file with the subtitles and displays the subtitles or transcript in sync with the video image. If a VTT file does not yet exist for the corresponding video, it is generated beforehand by a Speech-To-Text (STT) system or created manually using the VTT editor. A further development of the prototype foresees that existing subtitles can be translated into another language on demand in the video player or even, later, be displayed in sign language with the help of avatars (see illustration below). In order for the video file, including subtitles, to be played offline, the video and the corresponding VTT file are downloaded to the device on demand.
